London! (not the one in Ontario)
I know I hardly ever post, and I'm sorry about that, really I am.

But!

Ken and I are going to be in London for 8 days in September, and I would love to hear about cool things to do there, especially things which I am not as likely to find in my Lonely Planet guide, like bookstores and yummy local not-famous restaurants and things like that. We're already planning to do lots of museums and an afternoon trip to see Charleston and maybe Battle Abbey or something like that. I am rereading Eleanor Farjeon, which makes me want to wander around Sussex. We might go to Hay-on-Wye overnight, if I can manage that level of organisation, but since we're going to be relying on public transit to get everywhere I'm not sure how feasible that'll be.

I'd also *really* love advice on where to stay, both specific places and more general ideas about which bits of London one might want to live in for most of a week. When we stayed in Vancouver (BC) for our honeymoon, we lucked out by finding a neighbourhood with a beautiful Victorian B&B from which we could walk to organic bakeries and Greek restaurants and bookstores. Surely there's somewhere like that in (or near) London? (Near is fine, I think, since starting the adventurous part of the day with a short (20-30m?) train ride into London and then going to museums all day and then training back seems perfectly reasonable to me.)

Any and all thoughts are most gratefully welcome!

If I didn't have the time, opportunity, and Aberdeen to re-enact the voyage of Three Men in a Boat (TSNOTD), I would at the least make a tour of the Shambles. Four hour drive and an unknown distance by train, but that's what I'd do.

York is only a couple of hours by train. Possibly a bit less.

Because of the insane cost of transport in London and the UK generally, I'd suggest staying somewhere really central (Zone 1) like Bloomsbury, where there are numerous relatively inexpensive B&Bs and private hotels, close to both the British Library and the British Museum, not to mention the less well-known museums that form part of University College London, plus an assortment of bookshops - the University of London branch of Waterstones, Persephone Books, Gay's the Word, Skoob Secondhand, Unsworth & Co remainders, without even stretching out towards Forbidden Planet, Murder One, and the Charing Cross Road bookshops, all within easy walking distance. Handy for public transport too. As well as being, well, Bloomsbury, with garden squares and so on.

Thank you for the recommendation! As well as the list of bookstores -- I had not really connected the fact that the rare imported Persephone Books I read from the library would be readily available at their place in London. I think I'm going to need to bring an empty suitcase just for books...

Oh, very jealous. When I visited England in 1994 the condo I stayed in in London was in the Docklands, right off the Tube, and we had a pass for the Underground for the week that covered all zones. Went to a bunch of pubs (the Grapes was cool because Dickens wrote there), did a few of the touristy things (Big Ben! Parliament!), saw a very cool sci-fi bookstore (name of which I'm blanking on at the moment)...

Hm, wish I had more solid information to provide. :)

Foyles bookstore on Charing Cross Road is a must. It's just huge, and full of wonderful things, and very browser-friendly.

Other than that... the parks are worth a visit (St James, Hyde Park), and try and take in a show in the West End if you can. There's loads to choose from. I'd recommend staying in Zone 1 as oursin suggests - you can get a cheap ticket for the tube and buses which will give you unlimited travel throughout central london for not much money.

Finally, my two favourite museum recs would be the British Museum, and the V&A. The V&A has some truly amazing galleries, especially for anyone with an interest in art.

Enjoy! And if you do make it to York (it's quite an expensive train ride, although only 2 hours or so and thus a feasible day-trip, so look for ticket bargains as far in advance as you can - www.nationalrail.co.uk - if you want to make the trip), feel free to ask for further recs. :)

I really want to go to Hyde Park, and also over into Kensington Gardens to see the statue of Peter Pan. And we are definitely going to the V&A and the British Museum! And to whichever Tate has Vanessa Bell & Duncan Grant's paintings.

We ended up staying in West Hampstead, as it was cheaper than staying in Zone 1 even with transit costs. (Also, I blame this on Stella Gibbon's Westwood which has lots of stuff about Hampstead Heath in it.)

Eat at Wagamamas! http://www.wagamama.com/ Of all the places I ate in London, Wagamamas was the best! They serve super tasty, super fresh food and it's priced well.

I'm not sure where to suggest you go, but I should come down and try to catch up with you at some point, given that I'm in Leeds, about two and a half hours by train to the north. :)

I have done so! And yes, I'm in a pretty constant state of ZOMG, although I am also panicking because I'll be missing 2 weeks of class & thus have an essay due before I leave. (A short essay, but that doesn't really make it much easier...)

The Lonely Planet guide for Britain of a few years ago had good information on London.

Expect to walk slowly down Charing Cross Rd, really, since there's a number of good bookshops there. (Even the Borders is pretty good.) Seconding Forbidden Planet, which is easier to find now than it was the first time I visited it.

If you'd like a quiet pocket of the outdoors, I recommend visiting Hampstead Heath, which one can do by bus more easily than by Tube.

I was in London both times to visit the BL and other repositories accessible via north-directed train, so I stayed near King's Cross (Alhambra B&B, in Argyle St, which I liked); that was probably slightly cheaper than staying in Bloomsbury. However, I was willing to walk a fair bit and see things casually, since I wasn't focusing on sightseeing activities--if that makes sense.

Hampstead Heath looks gorgeous, and I think we're going to end up staying nearish there, as I found a place that looks both clean and low-priced -- staying in Bloomsbury sounded wonderful, but I think I left booking rooms too late, since the cheapest I could find anything was in the $150/night rate. Of course, I am being a spoilt American who wants a bathroom _in her room_, which does up the price.

Slow walk down Charing Cross Rd -- check.

I was about to post Foyles when I saw scribblemoose already had, so let me second the recommendation. I had a fabulous time in there -- huge with all kinds of good stuff. I got my modern Hebrew grammar there -- not that you're looking for one, probably, but it's a rare find and shows the breadth of their holdings.

I have a stack of London guides you'd be welcome to borrow -- Fodor's Citypack, Rough Guide to London Restaurants (2005), The Essential Guide to London's Best Food Shops, and Daytrips London. Let me know if you want to use any of these.

I would love to borrow the Restaurants & Food guides, and also the Daytrips! That last one seems especially helpful, since I really do want to get out of the city at least once or twice.

I don't know London well at all (in fact, we're going to be walking there from York in September too!), but one place we tend to go there is the Carluccio's Cafe. I think there are also restautrants, which are realy expensive, but you can get a decent meal in the cafes for a reasonable price, and it's always been marvellous food when we've gone. I'd also agree with Scribbles about a west end show - they're fantastic! At the end of our honeymoon we went to see Chicago, and I'm completely converted to musicals having previously found them excruciating.

Hope you have a fantastic holiday!

Oooh, musical conversion! When I get back we *really* must talk more, since I can recommend all sorts of exciting musicals now that you're a convert, and also because I just miss chatting with you in general.

I hope your trip to London is as lovely as ours. I'm going to try to keep a travel journal that I can share when I get home, but all good plans often go awry....

Have fun in London! I've only been there the once, and just three days at that, but it was great just to be there. Even the touristy stuff is worth doing, but the company is as important as the destination and I'm sure the two of you will make many fond memories. Be well.
